I know what you might be thinking.

When your literal job title is "Engagement Photographer" it would make you less emotional to photograph a proposal, but that couldn't be less true. Planning, scheming, and bringing the whole to proposal to life is one of the most beautiful parts of my job, tremendous honour, and having the chance to witness someone else's proposal is such a profound joy. It never gets old. It's always magical. And it's always so moving, in such a human "this is what life is all about" kind of way. When Matt reached out to help plan a surprise engagement for Jennifer at Nymphenburg Castle, I knew we were in for something special.



Why Nymphenburg Castle is one of my favorite Munich proposal spots

If you're considering Nymphenburg Castle for your own proposal or engagement session, here's what to know:

Beauty: Nymphenburg is genuinely one of the most striking backdrops in Munich. It has the most gorgeous gardens, grand architecture, and old English-style statues throughout the grounds. It photographs beautifully in Spring, Summer Autumn, and Winter.

Intimacy: Because the palace grounds are so expansive, there's plenty of space to find a quiet corner even when the gardens have visitors! You don't need to worry about a proposal feeling like it's on display in front of 20 people. Perfect for it to feel intimate in such a grand location!

Getting there: Nymphenburg sits a bit outside Munich's city center, which is actually part of why it stays peaceful. From the main train station, it's about a 15-20 minute tram ride (tickets around €3.50) to the "Schloss Nymphenburg" stop, then a 10-15 minute walk to the main gate. Yes, you can also book an Uber!

Working with a photographer here: It's an easy location to shoot in discreetly. There are always other visitors with cameras around, so I usually blend right in as a tourist enjoying the gardens like everyone else until the big moment!

Planning your own Munich proposal or engagement shoot

A few things I always tell couples planning a proposal in Munich:

Timing matters more than the "perfect" spot. Golden hour (early morning or a couple hours before sunset) gives the softest light and fewer crowds.

Let your photographer help you plan the "reveal" moment. Where you're standing, where I'm positioned, and how we keep the surprise a surprise all matter more than people expect.
